Billing software for a kirana store

Billing software for a kirana store is not the same job as a showroom till. A kirana shop weighs things, sells the same packet under four barcodes and gives half the lane credit. Here is what it actually has to do.

A kirana bill is not a showroom bill

A showroom sells one thing at one price. Somebody scans it, the till adds it up and the customer pays. Every billing package in India is built around that one moment.

A kirana counter is a different job. In one bill there is a packet of Parle G with a barcode on it, three hundred grams of moong dal off a sack, a loose bar of soap with no code at all, and a bag of atta the customer will pay for on Friday. Four different problems in one bill, and the man at the counter has thirty seconds.

Software that cannot do all four sends the shop back to the calculator for half of them. That is why so many shops buy a package, use it for a month and go back to the register.

One bill with a packet, a weighed item and a loose item on it.

Loose goods are the test

This is the part most packages fail. A kirana shop sells dal, chawal, sugar, oil and masala by weight. There is no barcode on three hundred grams of anything.

What has to happen is simple to say. The man picks the item, puts it on the scale, and the weight lands in the bill with the money already worked out. No typing, no multiplying, no reading the number off the machine and hoping.

NSHOP reads the weighing scale over Bluetooth and does exactly that. Stock for a loose item is kept in kilos, and the counter can sell in grams or kilos without converting anything.

If the software cannot weigh, it cannot bill a kirana shop. Everything else is the easy half.

The scale sends the weight. The price is already worked out.

The same packet has four barcodes

Soap comes in a carton this month with one code on it and next month with another. The company changes the pack, the code changes with it, and the shop now has two items in its books for one thing on the shelf. Stock splits, reports lie, and nobody notices for a year.

The fix is to let one item carry as many barcodes as the world gives it. Scan any of them and the same line comes up. NSHOP keeps them against the item, and merging two items that were really one is a single screen.

Udhar is a ledger, not a note on a pad

Every kirana shop runs on credit. The register at the counter has a page for each family, and it works until the man who keeps it is away, or the page is full, or somebody argues about a figure from March.

Credit belongs against a name in the same place the bills are. Cut a bill on credit and the balance moves. Take a payment and it moves back. The counter sees what a person owes before the next bill is cut, not after.

Every name, what is owed, and the day it was last touched.

Stock has to come off as the bill is cut

Stock that is counted once a month is a guess for twenty nine days. The point of putting a shop on software is that the shelf and the screen say the same thing at four in the afternoon.

That means every sale takes its own quantity off, every purchase bill puts it back, and the two are the same ledger. Then the reorder list writes itself from what actually moved, and a shop stops finding out it is out of something when a customer asks.

What is on the shelf, what it cost, and what it is worth.

What it should cost

A kirana shop is not a chain. Software that costs more than the shop makes on a slow day will not stay.

NSHOP is a monthly price with the counter, the app and the reports in it. There is no charge per bill and no charge per item. The shop that wrote it is a kirana shop in Bhilai, and it pays its own bill with the same software.

3,326bills cut on it so far
1,366items the shop keeps
43,864in the shared catalogue
9counters it runs on

Questions people ask

Which billing software is best for a kirana store?

The one that can weigh. Most packages in India handle packets well and loose goods badly, so test that first with a real sack of dal before anything else. After that look for many barcodes against one item, credit against a name, and stock that moves as the bill is cut.

Does a kirana shop need GST billing software?

Only if the shop is registered. Many kirana shops are below the limit and never raise a tax invoice. NSHOP hides GST entirely for a shop that does not keep it, and turns it on for a shop that does.

Can it run without internet?

The counter keeps working when the line drops. Orders from the customer app need the line, because they come from outside the shop.

Is there free billing software for a kirana store?

There are free packages, and they are usually free because they stop at the invoice. The work in a kirana shop is in the weighing, the credit and the stock, and that is the part nobody gives away. Ask what happens on the second month before paying nothing.

How long does it take to put a shop on it?

The items are the work, not the software. A shop that has its list ready is billing the same day. A shop starting from nothing builds the list as it buys, because every purchase bill adds what it brought in.
